Configuring the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X for a Branch Office Network

When setting up a branch office network, it's essential to configure your router correctly. In this article, we'll guide you through the process of configuring the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X, highlighting key steps and considerations.

The first step in configuring the EdgeRouter X is to assign IP addresses to the LAN and Management interfaces. To do this, navigate to the 'Set interfaces' menu and specify the desired IP address for each interface:

set interfaces ethernet eth4 address 192.168.61.1/24

set interfaces ethernet eth1 address 192.168.60.1/24

In our case, we're not using interfaces eth2 and eth3, so let's shut them off to avoid confusion:

set interfaces ethernet eth2 disable

Adding interface descriptions can also help keep things organized:

set interfaces ethernet eth4 description 'Management'

set interfaces ethernet eth1 description 'LAN'

set interfaces ethernet eth0 description 'WAN'

It's crucial to assign the correct IP addresses to each interface. In our setup, we'll be using eth0 for the WAN connection and eth1 for the LAN.

To confirm the current configuration of your EdgeRouter X, run the 'show interfaces' command:

show interfaces

The first step in securing your network is to disable any physical network interfaces that aren't in use, denying potential intruders access to the device. We'll also assign IP addresses to the LAN and Management interfaces.

Before proceeding, ensure that your device is updated with the latest firmware and rebooted.

In this article, we're using a brand new Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X, fresh out of the box and updated with the latest firmware (1.8.5 as of this writing). We'll be configuring the router in a Branch Office-type setup, with a WAN connection on Eth0, a LAN connected to Eth1, and a Management interface on Eth4.
